After the April edition of Teradata Universe in Madrid, we are taking off to meet you on the other side of the Ocean and participate in the Denver edition. MANTA will be at Teradata Universe for a reason–Teradata is the scanner we have been using the longest, for over 10 years.

How Did It All Start?

Many moons ago, the first projects that we did back in 2008 included Teradata technology. With the great support of Teradata professionals, we have been helping our customers automatically scan data warehouses built on this solution ever since. Now, MANTA is helping Teradata trust their own company data. Teamwork makes the dream work, as they say.

How Does It Work?

When MANTA connects to the Teradata database, it reads the code, understands it, documents the data flow, and pushes it into third-party data governance and metadata solutions or our native UI.

And on top of that, we currently scan almost every possible type of data stored in Teradata. You can read more on our Tech Hub.

MANTA + TERADATA: What’s In It For Me?

Not sure if data lineage can be of help to your business? We are aware that the advantages of knowing how your data flows might not be visible at first glance. But, we also know it’s a gateway to a boost in data governance efforts, development acceleration, speeding up the modernization process, ensuring data quality, shortening time-to-market, and data security enhancement, just to name a few.

We are not giving a presentation this time, so we’ll always be available for you at booth 410 at Teradata Universe. Find us there so we can discuss how exactly your company can profit from dataflow visualization.

Manta Tools 3.15: Ready for Azure, Improved Teradata & Oracle + More!

October 27, 2016 by

The summer is inevitably over and we are introducing a new version of Manta Tools.

The summer is inevitably over and we are introducing a new version of Manta Tools.

The key feature of this release is the addition of a new supported SQL sub-dialect – this time in the Microsoft SQL Server family. After a few requests, we’ve implemented support for the Parallel Data Warehouse sub-dialect, which is used in Microsoft Azure. This not only broadens our portfolio within Microsoft SQL Server space, but this update has also really helped our existing customers with MSSQL in their BI stack.

The workflow options in our data lineage tool have also been massively updated – with this new set of features, our customers are now able to filter extracted workflows by custom parameters, such as regular expressions.

Improvements have also been made to our Oracle and Teradata parsers, effectively enhancing Manta Flow’s capabilities to crunch even more types of custom SQL code.

How to Maximize the Value of Your Teradata-Based DWH

Manta Flow deployed in Teradata-based environments helps to improve data lineage, fulfill regulatory compliance, and manage off-loading projects, eventually maximizing the value of your data warehouse.

Manta Flow deployed in Teradata-based environments helps to improve data lineage, fulfill regulatory compliance, and manage off-loading projects, eventually maximizing the value of your data warehouse.

Since we announced our partnership with Teradata, we’ve been asked many, many times for a brief summary of how solutions that run on Teradata can benefit from deploying Manta Flow.

1. Massively Improve Your Data Governance

Organizations need to automate what they do and get rid of manual labor as much as possible. Boring and repetitive tasks, when done manually, are the greatest source of ineffectiveness and errors. One example is analyzing business logic hidden inside custom code. Yes, it is hard but necessary to extract and manage metadata from code. We can’t count on developers to document it. And it is not enough to cover 60% or even 80% of that logic. Manta Flow can help with that – automated data lineage can help not only with overall data governance, but with documentation for regulatory compliance as well.

Technical Insight: What exactly is Manta Flow able to extract?

Manta Flow extracts a Teradata database dictionary via a JDBC connection reading these tables: DBC.DBase, DBC.TVM, DBC.TVFields, DBC.Indexes. Manta Flow also extracts DDL scripts of views, macros, and stored procedures from selected databases using the statements SHOW VIEW/MACRO/PROCEDURE.

2. Enable Off-load to Hadoop

More and more organizations are shifting their Teradata-dedicated resources to perform higher value activities. The main reason is they do not want to lose Teradata’s outstanding performance, but they are frustrated by performance degradation caused by routine ETL workloads. Many of them choose Hadoop, which solves their ETL nightmare, while allowing them to keep all the benefits of Teradata’s powerful database solution. And Manta Flow is able to help with that – complete data lineage and sufficient documentation can speed up off-loading projects by hundreds of percent.

Technical Insight: Manta Flow is also able to inspect Teradata database query logs (known as DBQL) which can help with off-loading projects (including specific statistics, your own rules how to select offloading logic, etc.).

3. Manage Complex Change

Do you know how much time you spend on manual impact analyses in your BI department? Imagine the use case described in one of our previous blog posts:

“One day an analyst gets a change request to analyze. The sales department has come up with a new line of products that have super-cool names that unfortunately do not fall within the current maximum length for product names.

Therefore, the maximum length for product names has to be increased in the corresponding source system, so the data type for this column in the extract for the data warehouse has to be changed too. Moreover, this value is propagated throughout the whole data warehouse to reports; sometimes it is even concatenated with a product category name, and so on. So, our analyst needs to find all tables, views, workflows, and scripts that might be affected by this change so that he can create a plan for implementation.”

Automated analyses, provided by Manta Flow, can reduce the time spent on such investigations by 90%.

Does this sound too good to be true? Yes. Can Manta Flow actually help with all this stuff and maximize the value of your Teradata-based data warehouse? Yes. Ask for our free trial and test it yourself. Email us at manta@mantatools.com or fill the form on the right.

Manta Tools Is Now a Teradata Partner

August 8, 2016 by

We’ve been close for years now, but after some time it’s good to make it official: Manta Tools has become a partner of Teradata International.

We’ve been close for years now, but after some time it’s good to make it official: Manta Tools has become a partner of Teradata International.

Teradata and Manta Tools have been a perfect fit for a long time now – our first projects done back in 2008 had Teradata technology present. We’ve quickly adapted and were ultimately successful in fully supporting Teradata’s technology and the others that connect with it too. Getting full end-to-end data lineage can be difficult in some metadata managers, but we, with the help of great Teradata professionals in both Europe & the US, were able to achieve that.

“This is another big step for us on our amazing journey which started a few years ago when we launched our first version of Manta Flow, our flagship product,” explains Tomas Kratky, CEO of Manta Tools. “And it should come as no surprise that our first implementation was to support great Teradata IDW technology and to provide detailed data lineage from quite complex BTEQ scripts for our customer. Since then many years have passed. We have developed significantly, acquired many new customers in both the U.S. and Europe, and added several other platforms and programming languages, but Teradata will always be our ‘first love’.”

Manage Complex Change in Teradata DWH

Every system changes over time, and so do the source systems providing data to warehouses. Let’s see how we can help.

What should he do? Well,…

  • First, he should ask the ETL department, how this extract is transformed, what workflows work with it, and what tables are filled with the cleaned data. Did you know that both a short and a full name are generated from this value and that one of the code identifiers also goes to other tables?
  • Fine, so he gets the list of stage tables. Then, he tries to find documentation in the database detailing how these tables are transformed to the core and also which data marts are built on top of the core. We hope that all the documentation is up-to-date!
  • And finally reports: is it necessary to change the reports? What about refreshing the models and republishing the reports? He needs to find all the reports that use these data marts. And there are many of them.

This could take a lot of time and effort, not only for the analyst himself, but also for staff in other departments. Manta Flow can reduce time spent on impact analysis by more than 90%. Do you know how much time you spend on manual impact analyses in your BI department? Our customers have already saved millions of dollars with automation.
