MANTA and Alation – Integration Overview

For any organization undergoing digital transformation, effective data governance is critical. Today, modern enterprises demand end-to-end lineage because it is crucial to data governance, providing comprehensive understanding and security and driving effective data use. However, organizations struggle with traditional approaches to data lineage that require huge amounts of manual effort, provide an incomplete view of the data in disparate sources, and limit valuable knowledge to a handful of technical users.

Alation and MANTA solve these challenges by integrating MANTA’s enhanced automated lineage into the Alation data catalog to create an effective, agile enterprise data environment.

Benefits

Combining both platforms’ capabilities gives any organization a solution to automatically extract end-to-end lineage from disparate sources and make that lineage easily consumable by technical and business users. Teams leveraging the solution observe a 60% growth in productivity.

Through this solution, Alation users will not only be able to immediately identify what data the organization stores, where it resides, and how to use it, but the lineage provided by MANTA will also help them understand the complete journey of the data and how their data assets are connected.

Alation helps bring MANTA’s rich lineage knowledge to business users, empowering them to make crucial business decisions faster. Teams can collaborate more quickly as they have access to critical intelligence about the data/lineage. As a result, they increase efficiency by reducing the time needed to carry out impact and root-cause analyses on all data by 90%.

How It Works

Having MANTA’s lineage integrated into the Alation data catalog allows users to view end-toend column-level lineage and transformation lineage directly in the data catalog. Thanks to the integration, Alation users can seamlessly switch over to MANTA whenever they need to see a more detailed view of the lineage or a historical record of that lineage. How do we do it?

MANTA retrieves lineage from across various sources, not only within a single data source. MANTA does it by extracting lineage not only from data sources and BI tools but also from ETL and other data integration tools. This establishes a robust foundation for MANTA’s column-level lineage that is comprehensive, including the organization’s entire data flow.

Once the map of data flows is generated, MANTA will push that lineage information to the Alation catalog. This will allow Alation users to view MANTA’s end-to-end column-level lineage across ETL tools, data sources, and BI sources.

Having both solutions working together enables better collaboration between users. One such feature is the propagation of warnings across the lineage graph. If there is an issue with a particular table, the user who detected it can add a warning flag, and that warning will be propagated downstream from the lineage to all the objects on the way.

If you need to get even more detailed lineage—that is, to solve an issue that another team member has warned you about—you can go back to the table or data flow’s catalog page in Alation and click on Visualization of Data Lineage in MANTA. This will open the lineage in MANTA so you can see both table and column level lineage and understand how the data is flowing through the entire environment. From here, you can leverage all MANTA’s unique features to adjust the lineage to your needs. You can eliminate certain elements, compare your current lineage to historical lineage from a selected time in the past, and more.
