How does data provenance compare to data lineage?

By going beyond historical records of your data, data lineage looks at the possible impacts of data movements and how dependencies can affect one another. Using a detailed map of all direct and indirect dependencies between data entities within your environment, data lineage provides a complete overview of how your data flows throughout your environment. This gives you a greater understanding of the source, structure, and evolution of your data.

The word “provenance” means “place of origin” when speaking of recorded history, locations, and ownership of an item, whether it be a piece of artwork or a piece of data. Data provenance is the historical record—source origin, inputs, entities, factors, processes, systems, and locations—of specific data.
