Storing unnecessary data and the processes surrounding it just because you are not sure if you can throw them out is a pain. But why? And how can you fix it?

That old couch you don’t need anymore

“What do I even have up there?” is what you might be asking yourself. Well, it turns out that everything you have both stored and discarded up in your attic is a sign of the way your company treats its data warehouse. For example: You have a couch in the living room. You have one in the bedroom as well. So you don’t really need a third one, but you don’t want to throw out that perfectly good old couch. I mean what if you need it, right?

The same thing happens with data in your data warehouse. There are some types of data you are obligated to store for a certain amount of time, but other than that, clean it! There are so many companies storing outdated information that they can’t even use for anything anymore, but they continue to store it on their servers. Throwing away that “old couch” can save you lots of money on storage fees with your database and/or cloud provider as well.

The closet you never use

Next! What about that empty closet you have up there? Closets are convenient for storing random things – but not when they just take up space! And that is what happens to some “lost tables” in your data warehouse as well. When you make changes to the architecture of your data warehouse, you often stop using certain tables and optimize the table infrastructure. When that table no longer has a relation with other tables, it can easily become “forgotten” or “lost” among all the data in the warehouse, causing the data to become outdated, messy, and unnecessarily greater than it needs to be.
